Features - Using stone as : Living Stone Planters
In part the success and look of the Living Stone Planters is the porous nature of the stone we use - its ability to hold water. It literally is a stone sponge. Depending on the size of the stone I have been able to effectively measure & weight a planter holding as much as a gallon of water, without soil and no water in the planting chamber!!
Because of stone’s ability to hold water, it allows for a more consistent state of hydration acting more like soil than stone. To fully take advantage of the benefit of using stone over traditional plant containers, it is equally important to water the stone as well as the plants. Typically the planters do not need holes in the bottom for water drainage.
Watering Tip: Depending on the size of the planter you purchased one great way
to water is to set the planter in a white plastic food bucket.
Often used by restaurants, usually can be gotten for free,
or purchased from building supply stores like: Home Depot,
Lowe's, Walmart etc.
Place planter into empty bucket fill with water to the top
or as needed to submerge planter / plant. Allow to sit for
about 30 min. no added benefit if you let it stay longer.
Let drip dry and enjoy.
Moisture meters:
We highly recommend the use of moisture meters for seasoned
gardeners and especially if you are green
thumb challenged :-) Can be purchased at Fred Meyers, Walmart,
Home Depot, Lowe's etc. for less than $ 4 great investment
/ gardening tool use for all planters indoor or out.
From Cacti to Ferns, the plants do very well. The only exception are orchids, which at the time of this writing we are testing. We will let you know as the results are in. Contact us by phone or email if you want to be notified when we are ready to carry orchid planters.
In colder areas, planters will not break or fracture due to freezing (expanding water). As with all plants in containers or in the ground they should go into winter well watered to help prevent "winter kill". Introduce living stone planter (plants) to outside winter tempatures gradually.
Natural Aging: Some planter designs will have symbols, pictographs, kanji etc. Often times inlaid with a iron oxide patina as the planter ages there may be a bleeding of the patina on the stone. Adding a look of authenticity of centuries gone by, this may also hold true for the planters that are wrapped in iron wire. Depending on the placement of your planter and climate, after a season or two moss will often start to grow around the base of the planter. This adds tremendously to the look and over all beauty -- Best results when there is bare earth to stone contact.
